Introduction

There is no doubt that developments in technology have changed the way that we teach. In the last few years, the changing face of the internet and the development of Web 2.0 applications, including blogs, podcasts, and wikis, have enabled people to shift from being passive to active users. It is relatively easy for us to be part of a dynamic online community and to have a voice. The possibilities for such technology in education is far reaching, and at times, overwhelming.

"The use of [the term Web 2.0] has marked the transition of the Internet from a place where we surf on information and consume information to a place where we are creators of information. In essence we go from surfing the wave to BEING the wave itself as we contribute and share information on the Internet ocean." (Davis, 2006)


A wiki allows for many users to collaboratively build a website. In the classroom there is much potential to engage students in online learning and in class participation. As teaching colleagues, a wiki may also be used to help build a Professional Learning Community. The physical challenges of arranging meetings to network are difficult to overcome. Here is an opportunity to collaborate more efficiently and easily.

The goal of this wiki is to provide an introduction to wikis in general and to take a closer look at how they can be used to:
  • foster collaboration in the classroom
  • support and sustain professional learning communities

The potential for for wikis as a tool for collaboration is exciting. They are dynamic, versatile and easy to use. In education, wikis can not only serve as a useful tool for curricular applications, but also as a means of developing information literacy and digital citizenship in both students and teachers. These are among the critical skills necessary to keep pace with evolving technology today. Wikis are an ideal way for teachers to make use of innovative technology in their practice.
